A Simple Guide to Keeping Fruitcake Moist & Delicious
The holidays have come and gone. For most, this time of the year is bittersweet. Winter is still upon us, yet the season's charm has suddenly evaporated. Before being greeted by a chilly breeze, Jack Frost was nipping at your nose. Now that there’s no Christmas to look forward to, that breeze feels like an icy slap in the face.
But it is what it is. So, we continue to hunker down, keeping busy with indoor activities. Activities like taking down all the Christmas decor. The tree comes down, the tinsel is vacuumed away, and what about all these leftover Christmas desserts? The cookies have gone stale. The fudge has turned chalky. But, lookie here! Something we can save—a DeLuxe® Fruitcake!
See, the beauty of our fruitcake is that if properly stored, it can stay fresh for months! This means you can keep fruitcake moist well into the summer season—that is if it’s possible to keep your hands off it for that long. So, what do you do? Simple! Depending on how long you plan on storing your cake, follow these easy steps on how to keep fruitcake moist.
Short-Term Storage
Between 1 - 4 Weeks
After opening your tin and unwrapping your fruitcake from its cellophane packaging, it can stay fresh at room temperature for up to four weeks. Make sure to place your cake in an airtight container in between servings.
Medium-Term Storage
Between 1 - 4 Months
If you enjoy a slice of fruitcake maybe every other day, our medium-term storage option is for you! We recommend wrapping your fruitcake in plastic wrap before placing it in an airtight container. Then, place that container in the fridge. Doing this can ensure your fruitcake stays fresh for up to two months.
Long-Term Storage
Over 4+ Months
For you marathoners of dessert self-control, first of all, we’d like to say, "Bravo!" We bet you’re the kind of person who can walk past a wet paint sign without getting the urge to touch it. We envy your mental grit. So, for you masters of temptation, our long-term storage option is the way to go.
We recommend wrapping your fruitcake in a layer of plastic wrap followed by a layer of foil. Ensure your fruitcake and the foil do not contact one another. Then, place your wrapped cake in an airtight container and set that container in the freezer. When you’re ready to indulge your sweet tooth, remove your fruitcake from the freezer, slice off a section, and pop it in the microwave for a few seconds—not too long, though! Then, add a pat of butter, a drizzle of honey, or even a tiny tipple, and you’re ready to enjoy!
Do boozy fruitcakes follow the same steps?
Good question—yes! However, we have one or two caveats: We recommend taking a cheesecloth and lightly soaking it in the same liquor used to infuse your fruitcake. Wrap the cheesecloth around your fruitcake before wrapping it in a layer of foil. Once again, ensure your fruitcake and the foil do not come in contact with one another. Place your wrapped fruitcake in an airtight container and place all of that in the fridge. Following these steps on wrapping your fruitcake in cheesecloth means your liquor-infused cakes will stay fresh for up to six months!
